Google has announced a slew of new Android, Chromebook, and Wear OS features aimed at increasing connectivity, productivity, and accessibility. The announcement was timed to coincide with the start of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona today. Among the new features are Fast Pair support for Chromebooks, Google Keep shortcuts for your phone and smartwatch, and new Wear OS accessibility modes.
Fast Pair will soon be able to connect new Bluetooth headphones to a Chromebook with a single tap, according to the company. If a user has already configured headphones with their Android phone, their Chromebook will connect to them automatically. Google did not provide a specific release date for this update, but did state that it will be available "soon."
As part of today's audio announcements, Google Meet will soon include noise cancellation on additional Android mobile devices, allowing users to block out background noise while conversing in a meeting.
Users will soon be able to easily increase the size of content on Chrome, including text, images, and videos, by up to 300% while maintaining the page layout, according to the company. Users will be able to set their preferred content size as the default, eliminating the need to change it every time they launch the browser. The new update is now available in Chrome Beta and will soon be available to all users.
Google is releasing another productivity feature that allows users to annotate PDFs in the Google Drive app for Android with a stylus or simply by touching the screen. To write notes or feedback, experiment with different ink strokes, or use the highlighter tool to save important text on your tablet or phone. Following that, you can conceal, undo, delete, or save a new copy of your annotated documents. Google Drive for Android now supports freehand annotation.
Furthermore, Wear OS will receive two new sound and display modes that are intended to improve watch accessibility. Users will soon have access to mono-audio mode, which will help reduce the disorientation caused by split-audio. New color-correction and grayscale modes will provide users with more options.
In addition, the company is introducing new emoji combinations in Emoji Kitchen, a Gboard feature that allows users to send merged or remixed sticker versions of Google's emoji designs. Users can experiment with new basketball team and spring options before sharing them with others.
Another exciting new feature is the upcoming release of new tap-to-pay animations in Google Wallet to assist with in-store transaction confirmation. Google has hinted that users will begin seeing "joyful penguins" and other characters next week.
